Just as a high rise building with faulty load bearing pillars cannot remain stable for too long and will eventually collapse. So is true for primary education, if not imparted to a minimum necessary level, the grown up students will never get the confidence of taking up complex projects.
An observation may be useful in this context. If you search you may find that lot of Indians who have engineering degrees from various colleges in India are working successfully in USA however if you look for those Indians who have authored quality textbooks and who are teaching faculty in American university have their undergraduate education mostly from IITs. Even among those who are in faculty in USA if you further go those who have excelled in basic research you may find that they had their primary education from relatively good quality schools, which are usually not the government school.
All parents wish that their kids should be happy and joyful. They bring so many birthday gift for them. However what they do not realize is that more than giving them gifts if they make sure that their kids are progressing well in picking up the basic language and mathematical skills, they will provide them not only confidence but a more lasting gift that will help them throughout their lives. If both mother and father are educated they should jointly take up the responsibility of making sure that their kid is picking up the necessary skills. Even if you do not know mathematics pick up NCERT books, read them carefully and you will be ready to at least monitor how your kids are progressing. It needs patience, sacrifice of your own time from your busy work schedule but it is worth it. Remember, your duty as parents is not merely to make sure that your kid is regularly going to a good school, but also to personally to be in touch with his progress on daily basis.
The task is enormous what it requires is opening of very large number of primary schools all over India which have qualified teachers, pay scale comparable to institutes good lab and project facilities. Now is the time when we go for national level primary school. For this we have to drastically change our priorities. Realize that quality primary education is what will take India forward in coming decades.
